The Water Fountain

I’ve always thought the world was happening in the city

The action, the noise, the change, the inspiration

I was wrong

I drop the car at the mechanics, I’m walking home

A long country road ahead, the mind takes advantage

Lists and priorities, what to do today, next week, forever

Pressing, urgent, persistence that can’t wait, so arrogant

Bolstered by the beautiful day, I stop them in their tracks and look around

It’s finally spring and green buds are on the trees

So often underrated by me, buds and growth

I let them in and can feel them, their vital energy

I commend myself for mindfulness and look around again

I see a water fountain across the road,

One of the old, always unused and broken

Standing strong, a message on a board beside says

Restored by…We the People, No Water Charge

Now I’m stopped in my tracks,

Surprised by the profound Action and Will

Presented on this corner of the country world

Something I’ve never seen before, so simple

I’ve always thought the world was happening in the city

The action, the noise, the change, the inspiration

I was wrong
