Holes

2024 winner Fingal Libraries Poetry Competition

Holes

She fields positivity.

Serves herself in every red berry juice.

A smile, a laugh, a touch

of encouragement. For everyone.

Her fingers and feet are nurtured

for round objects. Measured

for every ball. She holds

orange slices at half time.

She is a great sport. A mid field player,

wing back, goal-keeper who takes

a penalty shot. She is a rainbow

throwing colour on every grid of the court.

Everywhere, all at once.

When home is a hockey net full of holes.

Her game plan teaches how to protect.

She weaves team from many different threads.

Has no beginning and no end.

Lives invisibly,

in the zig zag tacks of a sail boat. She

would give you her life jacket to float

upstream, warm-up any dream that may

or may not lie waiting.

When a whistle blows, we hear her echo

still.
